While we were busy with GDPR, the Cloud Act was passed: Security and prevention for Office 365 (2/2)

Last post we talked about the passing of the Cloud Act, a privacy and security legislation with implications for European businesses using cloud services from US tech giants. This post will be focused in email protection for Office 365, regarding last Gartner researches.

By the end of 2017, Gartner published How to enhance the Security of Office 365. This research shows some interesting points, as by 2020, 50% of organisations using Office 365 will rely on non- Microsoft security tools to maintain consistent security policies. Although O365 includes security tools by Microsoft, Gartner analysts advise to adopt a cybersecurity strategy more efficient, adding external tools, specially concerning the email protection.

This idea is developed by Gartner in another study, How to Work With (or Compete Against) Microsoft Office 365, in which it is explained that the use of Office 365 by users is focused on two axes: Office 365 Porplus, the inheriting of the traditional office suite, and the email service Exchange/Outlook. Email continues to be the main service of Office users, and by consequence, the main focus of security threats.

Even if Microsoft has made huge efforts to protect its O365, with specific security tools, in 2016, an explosion of attacks to companies with dramatic consequences (a research made by Vade Secure showed that, in 2016, 60% of SME suffering cyberattacks finished by closing in the short time period) has made Gartner analysts to recommend using external security tools. Microsoft does not have any objection.
